New FTC Rules For Bloggers And Its Impact

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has laid down new rules for bloggers. The rule applies to all who endorses products on their sites/blogs. This is the first time that the Federal Trade Commission has laid down a set of rules for bloggers. The endorsement rules were last updated in 1980. The rule comes into effect from December 1, 2009.

According to this new rule “Consumer-generated media” outlets such as bloggers will have to disclose their relationship with the company’s product they write about. That means that if a blogger writes about or reviews for example a washing machine then the blogger also has to reveal the exact relationship he/she has with the washing machine company. More so if the blogger is getting paid for the review. And if a consumer faces financial loss after buying the product from reading the review then the blogger will have to face a penalty up to $11,000.

The blogger has to from December 1, 2009 give the details of the kind of relationship he/she has with the manufacturer or the advertiser or the service provider of the product. Thus if a blogger has used a particular washing machine and had been told by the manufacturer to write about it then he/she has to say that to his/her audience straight away. If not the blogger may face prosecution and a five figure penalty. Even when the blogger gets a free product or payment or some other facilities from the manufacturer/service provider he/she has to reveal it. This includes celebrities too.

FTC has done this to ensure truthfulness as it is in paid advertisements. A reader must know who is behind the publicity of a particular product/service in the same way as it can be seen on television ads or in print ads. The guidelines are made to ensure reliability and truthfulness. Through these guidelines FTC tries to stop fraudsters and unscrupulous product endorsements. Both the blogger and the advertiser are subject to penalty if found guilty.

What does this new FTC rule means to bloggers?

The guidelines very clearly define endorsements and testimonials. They consider both the same thing and clearly states that an endorsement or a testimonial of any sort must reflect honest opinions, findings, beliefs or experience of the endorser. According to the guideline the endorser cannot convey any message that is deceptive. This way bloggers or endorsers will be treated the same way as an ad agency. There is no longer a safety spot for endorsers. They have to make every information public. Also the advertisers are also liable to inform the audiences about their endorsers in the same way as the endorsers are liable to give details of their sponsors.

Thus this means:

  • Any employer of a company who is blogging on the company’s website or somewhere else and is writing good or bad things about the company or its products should also say somewhere that he/she is an employer of that particular company.
  • Any company/employer running a blog/site on their latest products should say that.
  • If you want to share a personal experience you can do that though. But do mention that this is personal and not sponsored.

Lastly, there is no way you can violate these laws. If your thing is on the internet it is going to be monitored by FTC. So it’s better to follow their guidelines if you don’t want to pay $11,000.

What do you think? Is this rule by the FTC right or wrong?

Hackers – Why You Should Not Hack WordPress Blogs

I wonder why hackers hack – wasting their time, resource and energy in getting inbound links from irrelevant sites, mostly wordpress blogs. I don’t know if they have any other motive.

Whatever!!! If any hacker is reading this please understand that in the long run you guys are doing more harm than good. Here are a few reasons why you SHOULD NOT hack:

  • Inbound links from irrelevant site won’t help your site get better ranks in search engines.
  • In the long run all bogus links will be removed and you will get back to square one.
  • The time you are wasting can be utilized for writing good content, natural link building, social networking, pay per click advertising etc.
  • Don’t try to fool big search engines especially Google. If they catch, your site may get banned forever – you don’t want it, do you? They can do reverse IP tracking and can actually ban ALL the sites you own. You will loose ranking for your good sites too!
  • Don’t try to fool people – they are smarter than you are. And believe me there are many who will not take a second to report abuse to your web hosting company and search engines. As you may be well aware that hacking is an offence, your web hosting company may ban your sites. Again all your sites will be down for a lot of days, until you get another host. And its easy for a new host to know why your sites got banned so,
  • Unfortunately or fortunately you will have to get a new domain and start all over again.
  • Usually after failing in one or two attempts, you will get frustrated, leave your black hat SEO techniques and get into the real world of “hard work” SEO.
  • Ultimately you will regret your decision of being a spammer and wasting some precious years of your life.
  • The time you wasted on hacking actually made the world of SEO even more competitive and so you may have to work even harder than what you had to years ago.
  • Hackers cannot sleep well because in the back of their minds they carry the burden of doing all the wrong and harming innocent webmasters. Health issues – if you can’t sleep well your health is getting affected.
  • Last but not the least if you are too naughty with your techniques – you may even land up in jail.

This is getting longer than I expected. But I am sure if you are a hacker and have read till here, you will be a bit more scared hacking!

So please don’t do it – for yourself, for all the hard working people like us and lastly for the great world wide web which is mostly ruled by good people.

Is there any other point I have missed out on why people should not hack?

How to Create a Blog?

Before learning how to create a blog I recommend that you please read my article on what is a blog. This will give you an idea of blogs. You can then come back and read this post.

To create a blog you will need a blogging software and a hosting account. A Blog software is a content management software – CMS.

Thankfully there are many online blogging applications where one can open an account for FREE.

Two of them are very popular and free:

WordPresshttp://www.WordPress.com/
Bloggerhttp://www.Blogger.com

It won’t cost you a dime to create a blog with them. Just visit the site, register an account and start blogging – its that simple!

If you open a blog account with WordPress.com and choose a username like abc then your blog URL will be

http://abc.wordpress.com

If you open a blog account with Blogger.com and choose a username like abc then your blog URL will be

http://abc.blogspot.com

Note that Blogger is owned by Google. (But this doesn’t mean that Google promotes/favors blogs created in Blogger. You can create a blog on any platform you like. If your blog is really good, full of quality content, search engine friendly, no spam or illegal promotion techniques, then it should get traffic anyway from the search engines.)

For more information I recommend that you read the features of both WordPress and Blogger before opening an account with them. Here are the links:

I have a website and I want to create a blog in my website. Is this possible?

This is a very common question asked by website owners. Yes it is absolutely possible.

Most of the web hosting providers offer a one-step install of blogging software, again for free. You have to login to your website control panel and see if the facility is available.

If you are unable to find you may need to contact your host. But the good news is that most webhosts offer a blogging software for free. The reason is this that these software are open source project. Open source projects are mostly free projects and hundreds of people all over the world work on them just out of interest.

Since it does not cost anything to the web hosting companies, they offer the software for free to their customers.

However please check with your web hosting company if they offer a blogging software for free.

If they don’t offer, you can host your blog with Blogger.com in Your domain/website. For more information please visit this page:

Note: If you are serious about blogging and want to use it to market your product/service or do business – I would recommend that you register a domain and host your blog in your domain.

A simple reason is that you will have complete control over your blog and the URL of your blog will look like a professional one. Everyone knows that WordPress or Blogger blogs are free and might not take your business seriously.

I would love to hear your experiences of creating a blog. This will help me to improve this article. Please leave a comment.

What Is A Blog

Early 2006 gave an amazing method of online marketing – Blogs! I will discuss why blogs have become a very popular method of web marketing today. But before moving further, the big question:

What is Blog?

A blog helps to instantly publish content online. Unlike websites, uploading content to a blog DOES NOT require a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or any other software to upload the files to a server.

If you have access to internet, you can publish content from anywhere – home, office or anywhere else.

This is how it happens – Blog software asks you to login using a username and password (just like you login to your web-based email like Gmail etc) and post content. Once you click on the “publish” or “save” button, your content gets published instantly.

Once the content gets published a unique URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is created. It is something like this:

http://www.yoursite.com/blog/the-latest-post

You can then view the newly posted content online using a browser. Anyone in the world can also view it.

This is the primary reason why blogs became so popular. No technical knowledge required, no software hassles, just login and post content and view it online.

A great feature of blogs is that the visitors can leave a comment/feedback. This way it becomes interactive. Compare it to websites that are more-or-less online brochures of a company. You read the content and forget.

Here is some more interesting stuff. Some bloggers got such good response that they left their jobs and became full time bloggers. If you are thinking what happened to their income, then you will be surprised to know that their blogs gave them much more than what they earned from a full time job.

This was possible because their blogs got a huge amount of traffic (because of the quality and fresh content and some SEO techniques). The owner of the blogs then got some advertisers to advertise their websites on their blog. This way they generated some income. There are many other ways to generate income from a blog, but it requires a different post.

Another benefit of blog is that if someone really likes a blog, they can subscribe to the blog using a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed. They can then read the newly posted content using a RSS feed reader like Google Reader.

These are some of the reasons why blogs have become very popular today. Everyone wants to own a blog.

Today many people have their own blogs. This site is my blog. And I post articles related to search engine marketing because this is something I love. You can scroll down to the end of the post to leave a comment.

Many companies have their own blogs. This helps them to get user feedback on their product and/or services.

Most online news websites have their own blogs too. Readers can leave comments after reading a news item. For example: http://chronicle.com/news/.

A blog can be created in many languages. WordPress offers over 50 languages to choose from.

Here are some great blogs I have come across:

http://www.problogger.net/blog/ – One of the world’s most popular blog for bloggers. Owned by Darren Rowse of Australia. Offers tips on how to market a blog. He also owns http://www.livingroom.org.au/photolog/ which offers digital camera reviews and rating.

http://www.shoemoney.com/ – Owned by Jeremy Schoemaker. Offers all sorts of interesting information to bloggers. Gets over 10,000 unique visitors a day.

http://labnol.blogspot.com/ – Amit Aggarwal’s blog – an Indian who left his top paying full time job as a computer science engineer to become a professional blogger. He also owns http://www.labnol.org/ a.k.a. Digital Inspiration.

Amit has appeared on TV and radio channels including BBC, CNN IBN, CNBC, NDTV, Star TV, ETV and Blog TV Singapore. He was featured on the cover page of The Week magazine. Microsoft awarded him the “Most Valuable Professional” status for 2007 and 2008. Hindustan Times (a leading daily news paper in India) mentioned him as “founder of the Indian blogging revolution.”

Amit writes about computer software, consumer gadgets, web applications and personal productivity.

It is very easy to create a blog. Infact you can create a blog for free. Read my post on how to create a blog.

Your ideas/suggestions will help me to improve this blog. Please do leave a comment.
